Pizza in Napa Valley is closely intertwined with our deep culinary culture, which blends Italian traditions with California’s fresh, seasonal food ethos. Napa Valley may be known for its wine, but over the years, its reputation for pizza has grown as well, thanks to the area’s embrace of artisanal, wood-fired pizzas that pair perfectly with local wines.

Italian Roots in Napa Valley
Italian immigrants brought their culinary traditions to California in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including pizza, though the dish took time to become mainstream. Napa Valley, like many other parts of California, has a history of Italian influence, particularly in its agriculture and food industries. The first pizzas in Napa Valley likely reflected the simple, Neapolitan-style pizzas brought over by Italian immigrants, made with few ingredients but rich in flavor.

Wine and Pizza: A Perfect Pairing
As Napa Valley became a world-renowned wine destination in the mid-20th Century, local restaurants began incorporating pizza into their menus as a natural companion to wine. The late 1980s and early 1990s saw the rise of wood-fired ovens in Napa Valley’s restaurants, offering a rustic, flavorful style of pizza that complemented Napa’s wines. The pizzas were typically made with fresh, locally sourced ingredients, reflecting the “farm-to-table” philosophy that has long been a part of Napa’s culinary identity.

Artisanal Pizza
In recent decades, Napa Valley has seen a surge in artisanal pizzerias that focus on quality ingredients and traditional cooking methods, like wood-fired ovens and sourdough crusts. Restaurants such as Oenotri in downtown Napa and Ca’ Momi have gained a reputation for their authentic, Italian-style pizzas, often paired with Napa’s famous wines. These establishments have brought pizza to the forefront of Napa Valley dining, offering a refined twist on the classic dish with toppings like locally produced cheeses, fresh herbs, and vegetables from nearby farms.

Today, pizza in Napa Valley is a celebrated part of the region’s food scene, reflecting the valley’s commitment to quality and its ability to blend global traditions with local ingredients.
